Sydneysiders are invited to and can celebrate the run up to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games with the arrival of the Queen’s Baton in Australia.

The traditional curtain raiser to the Commonwealth Games, the Queen’s Baton relay will visit Sydney on Saturday 3 February, touring the harbour foreshore and ending in a community celebration at Pyrmont’s Pirrama Park.

The City of Sydney is working closely with the NSW Government and Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation to ensure a safe event that encourages everyone to line the relay route, support the Baton carriers and be part of the Commonwealth-wide celebrations.

The City has committed $128,000 towards the relay in Sydney and celebrations at Pirrama Park that will generate worldwide media coverage as well as increase community involvement in the event.

Sydney will be a part of the Queen’s Baton Relay that will travel through 70 Commonwealth nations and territories around the globe and the event at Pirrama Park will showcase Australia’s diverse landscape, history and people.

“We’re proud to support such an important event on the world stage,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.

“When the Queen’s Baton Relay makes its way through the city in February, Sydneysiders and visitors from across Australia will be able to celebrate our country’s proud sporting history and show their support for our athletes ahead of the Games.”

Her Majesty The Queen set the Baton relay in motion in March 2017. The Baton has been on a 388-day journey around Commonwealth countries. It will reach Sydney on 3 February 2018.

The Baton is due to travel 230,000 kilometres before the Games open on the Gold Coast on 4 April.
